Understanding Fidya
Feeding the Poor to Compensate for Missed Fasts
When someone is unable to fast in Ramadan due to an incurable illness or old age, they must pay Fidya. This is a mandatory charitable contribution used to provide meals for those in need.
The cost for Fidya is £5 per missed fast. This amount is calculated to provide two meals for a person in need. If you are unable to fast for the entire month of Ramadan, the total Fidya £150.
"And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]." (Quran 2:184)
